Sri Lankan Leopard: Tharmapalan Tilaxan
The Sri Lankan leopard is one of the most important and beautiful animals in our country. It represents the strength and natural identity of Sri Lanka. Through my work, I want to show how unique this leopard is—its appearance, behavior, and the role it plays in our environment. By documenting these animals, I hope people will understand why it is important to protect them and keep our wildlife safe for future generations.
Tharmapalan Tilaxan is a Sri Lanka–based documentary photographer and cinematographer whose work traces the fragile intersections of memory, identity, and place. Rooted in Jaffna, his practice focuses on people, their lived histories, and the landscapes that shape—and are shaped by—their stories.
For more than 13 years, Tilaxan has photographed communities navigating displacement, post-war realities, border politics, and the evolving relationship between humans and their environments. His acclaimed Garbage-Eating Elephants documentary series received international recognition and was published widely across global media platforms. His ongoing projects, including Moving Identities and long-term explorations of civil war scars, examine how migration, citizenship, and state power are experienced through the body and the land.
