‘Diyanna’ (letter and modifier making the sound ‘di’). Sinhala is a language native to Sri Lanka and is thought to derive its expansive alphabet from the Prakrits—the spoken vernaculars—brought to Sri Lanka by North Indian settlers. Since then, it has been influenced by the Dravidian language Tamil, with which it coexisted on the island for centuries. Sinhala language and its evolution capture the fascinating and accurate story  of how Sri Lanka is a hybrid island shaped by many peoples and cultures.

Public Works is an independent story publisher led by designer Alain Parizeau and writer Shamalee de Silva Parizeau. Grounded in the belief that stories are essential to cultural exchange and human connection, Public Works creates, discovers and publishes stories beyond the page, exploring wearables, prints, and spaces as vessels for narrative.
